Abstrakt: A new rapid technique was devised to measure the permeability of dry soybean [Glycine max(L.) Merr.] pods to water. An apparatus was constructed for exposing the outer surface of a pod to 0.1 M NaCl electrolyte and the inner surface to mercury. A computer‐controlled digital circuit was used to monitor the resistance drop across the pod wall, which was correlated with time of moisture penetration. Preliminary results showed up to an 11‐fold difference in median penetration times among six soybean genotypes tested. The method is suitable for screening soybean lines for potential resistance to field weathering caused by rain.
