Alternative tillage systems used with improved cultural practices are among the changes necessary to increase agricultural productivity. Farmers and the commercial seed industry are concerned whether existing hybrids will optimize yield in new systems. This research tested hybrid ✕ cultural system interactions in grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor(L.) Moench) on a Culumic Haplaquoll soil. Nineteen hybrids were compared in eight experiments using zero vs. conservation tillage and early vs. late planting dates in 1978 and 1979 at Concord, NE. Mean grain yields ranged from 8 790 kg ha ' in early planted zero tillage plots in 1978 to 5 740 kg ha−1in late planted conservation tillage plots in 1979. Eight superior hybrids in 1978 were also best in 1979 across cultural systems. Highest yields consistently occurred with zero tillage and early planting. Interaction of hybrid grain yield with planting date or tillage system was minimal. When 2‐yr means of hybrids were compared for the two tillage practices, there was a highly significant (P< 0.01) correlation (r= 0.87) among hybrid yields. There also was a highly significant (P< 0.01) correlation (r= 0.70 to 0.87) among hybrid grain yields between the two planting dates. Results suggest that plant breeders and farmers should find current hybrids well suited to changes in cultural practices in northeast Nebraska. |
