The Orion cyanide electrode was evaluated for estimating the cyanide content of forages, by comparison to the colorimetric alkaline picrate method. The two methods were highly correlated (r = +0.956). The Orion electrode was found to overestimate the cyanide content of the forage by about 40%. The overestimation can be corrected with the regression equation, Y = −4 + 1.43 X where X and Y are colorimetric and potentiometric values, respectively. The logarithmic response of the electrode precludes discrimination between plant samples until the CN concentration difference exceeds ± 15% approximately. The electrode method was found to be simple, rapid, and reproducible and well suited for screening purposes. |
