Abstrakt: The Crown of the Continent is that unique region of the Western Cordillera between the northern boundary of Yellowstone National Park and the southern boundary of Banff National Park. The Crown of the Continent Ecosystem Data Atlas (CCEDA) project was launched in May 1995, after some four years of planning by a binational consortium to integrate data and information on this internationally recognized ecosystem. The Atlas is designed to be a computerized repository of up-to-date biophysical and socioeconomic research materials covering southwestern Alberta, southeastern B.C. and western Montana. From a geomatics perspective, unique challenges are expected in this CCEDA project. The georeferencing problems resulting from provincial, federal and state data and metadata integration are outstanding in the setting up of the geospatial databases. With multidisciplinary users, multiresolution data collections and mul-tilocation computer systems, the design and implementation of a comprehensive environmental information system is another research and development area. Ecological process modeling using data and metadata is also a necessary requirement for environmental research and global change applications. The following discussion will emphasize the open challenges for geomatics as well as for the other scientific fields involved.
