Abstrakt: The spatial portal geoPolar represents an initiative undertaken by the Norwegian Mapping and Cadastre Authority to underpin the Norwegian government’s Arctic strategy. The main goal of geoPolar is to provide easy access to a wide range of geospatial information covering Norwegian land and sea territories, Svalbard and the Barents region. The technical approach in geoPolar is based on the service-oriented architecture (SOA) outlined in the Norwegian SDI framework. Among the standards mentioned in it, geoPolar uses Web Map Service 1.2 and 1.3, Web Feature Service 1.1.1, GML 2.1 and the ISO 19115 Metadata standard. The geoPolar application is built on open-source software components and is written in PHP/NET, using UMN Mapserver as the Internet map server component and PostgreSQL/Postgis as the database component. Geopolar is more than just a map viewer; it provides a rich set of functions that include adding one’s own contents and sharing information. All map content is based on Web Map Services, and the portal includes content from more than 70 services. Included are services being updated in almost-real-time and services implementing the optional WMS parameters’ time and height.
