Alan Nigel Drury was born on 3 November 1889 in Hackney, London, the youngest of five children of whom the eldest was a girl; he was eight years younger than his next elder brother. His father Henry George Drury was born in Kingsland, London, in 1839 and died in his 102nd year in 1941. His mother Elizabeth Rose Seear was born in 1847 also in Kingsland and was married in 1871; she died in 1937. H. G. Drury had entered the service of the Great Eastern Railway at an early age; he finally became superintendent of the line and in this capacity was much concerned with Royal journeys to Sandringham. He was made M. V. O. by King Edward VII. |
