Monosynaptic reflex discharges were evoked in the fifth lumbar ventral root of rat by synergistic stimulation of cut nerves to both heads of the gastrocnemius muscles. Small volumes of intracarotid injections of hypertonic solutions (NaCl, KCl, CaCl2, mannitol and sorbitol) produced a graded facilitation (increased amplitude of the monosynaptic component) of reflex discharges which persisted for 23 min. The facilitation did not occur in spinalized, decerebrate, adrenalectomized animals or in animals in which bilateral lateral hypothalamic lesions produced a temporary aphagia and relatively permanent adipsia. Results of intracarotid injections of hypertonic solutions and electrical stimulation of the lateral hypothalamus are also discussed. |
