Abstrakt: The field of rehabilitation encompasses a number of occuational groups represented by various job titles. Diversity among job titles suggests differentiation of unique occupational bodies of knowledge, work activities and division of labor, competencies, and training requirements according to professional roles. Knowledge and skill acquisition, and assessment of their levels among practitioners, necessitate identification of work duties and responsibilities performed. This manuscript reviews the strengths and weaknesses of role and function investigations in the rehabilitation field, and proposes a method to identify both shared and unique work activities and competencies of seven rehabilitation occupations. Implications of the proposal are discussed in terms of their potential effects on training, credentialing, and professional status acquisition of Independent Living Rehabilitation Specialists, Job Development and Placement Specialists, Rehabilitation Administrators and Supervisors, Rehabilitation Counselors, Rehabilitation Nurses, Vocational Evaluators, and Work Adjustment Specialists.
