Abstrakt: The scanning electron microscope was used to measure the density and linear characteristics of phallic papillae in hamsters. Papillae at the distal end of the penis were smaller and more highly concentrated than those at the proximal end. Castration of adult males resulted in the disappearance of papillae within 3 weeks after the operation. The administration of testosterone propionate (TP), but not estradiol benzoate, maintained papillae in adult castrates. The ability of adult females to elaborate papillae on the clitoris in response to exogenous androgen was enhanced markedly by treatment with as little as 10 μg TP during the neonatal period.
