The rapid increase in uterine weight of immature female mice exposed to male mice was abolished by removal of the female’s olfactory bulbs, or by removal of one olfactory bulb and sectioning of the remaining vomeronasal nerve within the cranium. The uterine weight increase was slightly reduced by removal of one olfactory bulb, but not by bilateral lesions in the anterior portion of both bulbs. From this it is concluded that the vomeronasal organs are receptors for the primer pheromone produced by male mice. |
