Formaldehyde as a Bacterial Growth Retardant in Reconstituted Artificial Ewe Milk

| Abstrakt: | Addition of 1 ml 37% formaldehyde (HCHO) to 4 kg of reconstituted ewe milk replacer retarded bacterial growth and prevented souring of the milk for 24 hr. at 25C, for 48 hr. at 17 to 18C and 72 hr. at 7C. Average daily gain of 14 Finnsheep lambs receiving the treated milk replacer at 13 to 19C ad libitumfor 50 days was 0.22 ± 0.02 kg/day vs.0.17 ± 0.04 kg/day for 14 sibs nursing their dams (P< .01). The lambs readily consumed the HCHO treated milk replacer with no scouring or digestive disturbances. |
