Abstrakt: Feedlot growth characteristics and carcass grade factors of 100 Hereford steers and 100 Hereford heifers were evaluated at 30-day intervals over a 270-day feeding period. Average daily gain increased with increasing time on feed up to 180 days. Average daily gains were lower for heifers than for steers, but were not significantly different. Dressing percent for steers and heifers was similar within treatments. Marbling score and carcass grade increased significantly up to 240 days on feed. Steers reached any given grade 30 to 60 days earlier than heifers even though intramuscular fat deposition was similar between the sexes. The data indicated that steers and heifers deposited intramuscular fat at a similar rate, and that the deposition of intramuscular fat is not a continuous process but proceeds in a step-wise pattern at 60 to 90-days intervals.
