These data suggest several differences in carcass traits that may be due to differences in breeding values for milk production. The high level group, whose breeding values were 382 kg. of milk per lactation above the low level group, had significantly more trimmed major wholesale and trimmed major retail cuts. The difference between the two levels was 5.96 and 3.44 kg. per carcass, respectively. There were no differences in grade or palatability between the two levels. The differences for all these traits may be reduced in the present data because of the relatively small difference between the two groups in estimated breeding values for milk production. There were several significant negative correlations between carcass traits and estimated breeding values in the low group. Although not different from the low group correlations, the same relationships in the high group were not different from zero. These data suggest that the negative relationship of EBV with several carcass traits may not be important above some high level of milk production but may become quite important as milk production drops to lower levels. This is illustrated in these data by the regression coefficient of EBV on trimmed major wholesale cuts in the low group being twice the size of the coefficient in the high group while standard errors of the two regression coefficients were not different. |
