Abstrakt: The extent of vitamin B12synthesis in the gastrointestinal tract of dairy cattle has been indicated by quantitative intake and excretion data. The amount of such synthesis is relatively very great, the excretion exceeding the intake, in the case of the older animals, 40 to 55 times, on a ration of mow-cured hay and oats. Rations containing either oats or corn do not differ significantly in their favorable effect on the rumen synthesis of vitamin B12. Very little B12was found in the urine, nearly all of that excreted being in the feces.
