The proportion of elderly people in the world's population is growing rapidly. Medical care of the elderly is complex and expensive, and hip fracture is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. The authors have reviewed recent work on the epidemiology of hip fractures and the financial burden of hip fracture care. Increased understanding of these issues will allow decisions about treatment and prevention of hip fractures to be made in a cost-effective manner. |
