Abstrakt: This study evaluated a long-term discharge preparation protocol for 50 burned children who were treated at the Shriners Burns Institute, Galveston. Families in the control group (24 children and their parents) received the usual three-day preparation before going home. Preparation for families in the experimental group (26 children and their parents) was initiated soon after admission and continued throughout hospitalization. For parents of children with greater than 30 burn surface area (BSA), preparation begun on admission was effective in decreasing anxiety at the time of discharge and on the first clinic visit (P<0.05). Compliance with the therapeutic regimen, assessed at the first clinic visit, was good. The results indicate a need for early planning and parent participation in the discharge process of children with burns greater than 30 BSA.
