Hospitalization for electric burns of the lip is usually unnecessary. Contrary to established protocol of admitting children for observation for potential bleeding, we have been managing patients in the office without increased risks or complications. We developed an alternative treatment plan of outpatient management based on initial assessment of the wound and weekly follow up. In addition, the nurse clinician evaluates the families' ability to cope with wound care and teaches them specific techniques for controlling potential bleeding. This method of treatment has been used for the past three years in 40 pediatric patients, whose total hospitalization was 14 days. Had they been confined for inhospital observation for seven to 21 days, the total hospital stay would have been 266 to 798 days. |
