Abstrakt: The complex nature of mucin glycoproteins has made study of their structure and function difficult. Recent advances in molecular biology have enabled researchers to better understand mucin structure and a variety of different mucins have now been described. This review examines the structure of intestinal mucins, mechanisms by which mucins are secreted and degraded, and how mucins interact with intestinal pathogens. A better understanding of the role of mucins in gut protection is gradually emerging.
