Abstrakt: The relationship between ratings of perceived exertion RPE and heart rate HR during graded exercise testing GXT and training were examined in 20 male patients following myocardial revascularization surgery MRS. Heart rates on representative training days at two T1 and eight weeks T2 after surgery were matched to similar HRs on a moderate level GXT 6 METs and symptomlimited GXT, respectively. With HRs matched at 110 beatsmin at T1 and 121 beatsmin at T2, RPE was approximately 12 in both GXT and training. At a given HR and RPE, MET levels were significantly higher during GXT than during training. At T2, RPE was unchanged in spite of an increase of 10.6 beatsmin in training HR and a 1.5 MET increase in exercise intensity. Thus, patients perceive exercise similarly at given HRs in both GXT and early rehabilitation, but with training and postsurgical recovery, perception shifts to yield the same RPE at higher HR and MET levels.
