Abstrakt: We examined the effects of soil and sediment properties on the sorption of benzidine. Batch equilibrium sorption isotherms were determined for 14 soil and sediment samples. The sorption isotherms were nonlinear and were well represented by the Freundlich equation, with 1/nvalues averaging approximately 0.5. Sorption was largely controlled by the pH of the aqueous phase. Benzidine sorption was corrected for sorption of the neutral species by organic matter, and sorption of the ionized species was found to be highly correlated with surface area of the soil or sediment.
