The case of a 25-year-old man with a mediastinal teratoma with sarcomatous transformation is presented. Teratomas occasionally undergo transformation into somatic malignancies such as sarcoma, carcinoma, leukemia, and neuroectodermal tumors. The pathogenesis for the transformation is debatable. Such transformation may cause diagnostic pitfalls and therapeutic dilemma because these malignancies usually are resistant to the chemotherapeutic regimes designed for germ cell tumors. |
