Abstrakt: •Balanced networks are widespread in the brain, yet their role in the spinal cord is unclear.•Respiratory and lumbar circuits show signs of balanced activity.•Network motifs are feedforward and recurrent inhibition. V1/V2b subpopulations could serve this role.•Current models do not contain these motifs, but they can be incorporated.•Novel balanced models can generate behaviors such as breathing and walking.
