More per capita amputations are performed in the US than in any other similarly developed nation. The majority of these amputations are for diabetes and ischemia. In addition, the US is currently engaged in armed conflict with lower-extremity injuries necessitating amputation on a daily basis. With this ongoing combination of civilian and military clinical scenarios, a review of the current concepts of lower-extremity amputations has never been more relevant. |
