A response rate of 76% was obtained to a questionnaire mailed to all doctors registered and resident in the Australian Capital Territory. Respondents categorized themselves as general practitioners (69), as specialists (71), and as being in a variety of “other” pursuits (73). Opinions were canvassed on health planning, the role of the family doctor and the conduct of general practice, health teamwork, health centres, and the system of payment for doctors. The results showed clearly that health centres would be acceptable under certain conditions, and that general practice is strongly supported. The opinions of specialists generally accorded with those of general practitioners, but frequently differed from those expressed by other practitioners, all of whom were salaried, and 77% of whom saw no patients. |
