The first report of the occurrence of carcinoma of the urinary tract in association with analgesic nephropathy was made by Hultengren in 1965. Subsequently Bengtsson (1968, 1969) produced evidence of a greatly increased incidence of carcinoma of the renal pelvis in kidneys damaged by analgesics. All these reports are from Sweden, and remain the only ones dealing with this association. During 1969 at Prince Henry Hospital, Sydney, several cases of carcinoma of the renal pelvis occurring in kidneys damaged by analgesics were seen, and this study ensued. |
