Abstrakt: The proportions of T and B lymphocytes in the spleen and peripheral blood were studied in six patients with chronic granulocytic leukæmia and one with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (all in clinical remission) and in six patients with non-malignant diseases. Phytohæmagglutinin transformation at 72 hours was used as an indicator of T-lymphocyte function, and B lymphocytes were identified by surface-bound immunoglobulins. The relative proportion of T lymphocytes in the spleens of patients with leukaemia was significantly higher than that of patients who did not have malignant diseases, where B lymphocytes predominated. The mean percentages of T and B lymphocytes in the spleen were 79% and 24% in the leukaemia group and 28% and 57% in the non-malignant group. No significant difference was observed in the proportions of T and B lymphocytes in the peripheral blood of the patients in these two groups. The preponderance of T lymphocytes in the spleens from patients with leukæmias may indicate an immunological reaction to the leukæmic cells.
