Abstrakt: The Southampton Children's Sleep Project was established to help families whose handicapped and/or chronically ill children had chronic sleep disorders. Sixty-one children of all ages were assessed and 57 treated. Forty-five of the children improved as a result of intervention. Treatment was found to be more onerous than the literature suggests. Maternal depression, family disturbance and medical factors in the children often required attention before behavioural management programmes could be initiated. The special skills needed to help these families are available but require co-ordination.
