A prospective, controlled trial of longterm oral anticoagulation and dipyridamole was carried out in ninety-two consecutive patients with primary cadaveric renal allografts. Fifty-four patients completed the trial—twenty-six in the treatment group and twenty-eight in the no-treatment group. Renal function, graft survival, and serial histology were used to assess the effects of treatment. Oral anticoagulation and dipyridamole had a significantly beneficial effect on the histological appearance of glomeruli and blood-vessels, but no apparent effect on interstitial change. Five patients were withdrawn or died with deteriorating renal function in the no-treatment group, compared with two such losses in the treatment group, but there was no significant difference in the mean serum-creatinine of remaining patients in the two groups. |
