The destructive effect of thyroid tissue on thyrotrophic hormone (T. S. H.)-activity in vitro has been studied by various authors.Seidlin(1940) stirred macerated beef thyroid gland with hog pituitary extract in saline and observed a decrease in T. S. H.-activity. Although his data are suggestive, they do not seem statistically significant and furthermore the conditions of his experiments are by no means optimal. Rawson et al.(1942, 1949) presented evidence indicating that T. S. H. lost its activity when added to the culture medium of thyroid tissue cultures. With the exception of lymph gland, no other tissues had such an effect. In the present study we investigated whether a similar effect could be demonstrated, when thyroid tissue slices were incubated in a medium containing T. S. H. |
