A review of the problems in managing 200 children with juvenile diabetes at a summer camp has been given. Some of these problems arise from changes of environment particularly due to increased activity at camp but they also reflect the unstable nature of juvenile diabetes. Some difficulties arise as a result of a different type of management from that at home. However, with adjustments of diet and insulin, diabetic children can within a short time participate in a normal camping program without any greater morbidity than normal children in other summer camps. Education of the child at camp regarding the nature of the changes required to manage his or her diabetes under different environmental conditions results in a more self-reliant person. |
