Abstrakt: Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a 5a-reduced metabolite of testosterone, has been implicated as the major androgen participating in the pathogenesis of benign prostatic hyperplasia, acne, male pattern baldness, and idiopathic female hirsutism. Compounds have been designed that inhibit the steroid 5a-reductase enzyme that forms DHT from testosterone. Although not yet generally available for use in humans, these specific inhibitors of steroid 5a-reductase have been studied in animals and have undergone clinical trials in humans. The compounds show significant therapeutic promise and may become major components in the treatment of certain androgen-related disorders.
