The possible compatibility or conflict of decision-making perspectives at the patient level and at the community level is illustrated by two diagnostic procedures, measurement of blood pressure and testing of stool for occult blood. In each example, the consequences of false-positive and false-negative errors are calculated and interpreted, and strategies for possible improvement in the use of the test are explored. |
