Advances in medical technology have been accompanied by widespread concern regarding the potential for their misuse, particularly in terminally ill patients. From an ethical standpoint, the fundamental issue is the autonomy of the individual, thus reflecting democratic and humanistic values. Strategies for meeting these concerns, such as the living will and the durable power of attorney, have achieved at least limited acceptance and serve as focal points for productive doctor/patient communication and public debate. |
