Abstrakt: Extraction of permanent pacemaker leads can be a demanding and potentially dangerous procedure because of scar tissue and adhesions encasing the lead along the vein path and endocardial encapsulation. Recently, intravascular countertraction techniques have been investigated that offer the promise of successful lead extraction without the cost and morbidity of cardiac surgery. This article reviews the indications for lead extraction and the extraction techniques reported. Intravascular countertraction techniques for lead extraction are a recent development and have not yet been fully reported in medical literature. Therefore, more detailed descriptions of those techniques and clinical results are included.
