Abstrakt: The availability of cadaver organs for the pediatric population in need of orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) remains insufficient. Because of this limitation, an innovative protocol using living-related liver transplant donors was developed and implemented at the University of Chicago Hospitals in 1989. The major advantage of this technique is that a donor is provided for essentially every child in need of OLT. Thus far, the results suggest that this procedure will be a useful addition in pediatric liver transplantation.
