Abstrakt: Conventional modes of mechanical ventilation such as assist-control and intermittent mandatory ventilation continue to be the standard supportive therapy for the treatment of adults with acute respiratory failure. Pressure-controlled inverse-ratio ventilation (PCIRV) is a new and potentially promising ventilatory modality for use in severe respiratory failure refractory to conventional therapy. This article describes some of the theoretical benefits and clinical limitations of PCIRV and stresses the importance of nursing observation and assessment during use.
