Abstrakt: The development of synthetic retinoids as pharmacologic agents for the treatment of numerous diseases of the skin has greatly altered our concept of the metabolism of vitamin A. Not only are vitamin A and its metabolites integral components essential to the functioning of the visual process but they affect the metabolism of other organs as well. The skin and mucous membranes are dramatically altered by pharmacologic doses of both natural and synthetic retinoids. Recent studies also indicate changes of the eye and its metabolism that are related to therapy with the retinoids.
