Psychopharaiacologic drags may play an important role in the treatment of pain and anxiety and their related side effects in children and adolescents with medical and surgical illnesses. The role of the pediatric psychiatrist in performing consultations on patients in this age group who have not responded satisfactorily to analgesic medication alone or who have unacceptable levels of anxiety is discussed. Background information necessary to perform an expert consultation is summarized. Representative studies of psychotropic medications used in treating the medical and surgical conditions of children and adolescents for whom consultations are most often requested are then reviewed. Some suggestions are made for additional research, which is much needed, in this fertile area. |
