Biphenylene and its derivatives were synthesized using the intramolecular coupling of benzoannelated zincacyclopentadiene intermediates prepared from 2,2′-dilithiobiaryls with ZnCl 2. The reaction proceeded smoothly and selectively to give the desired biphenylenes in moderate to good yields. |
