•Barbus altianaliscatches have reduced, with no current record in Lake Victoria where catches were reported in the past.•Barbus altianalishas nutritional, cultural and economical potentials if domesticated and natural stocks conserved.•It has the ability to survive in a broad range of aquatic environments and could therefore adapt well to captive conditions.•It has a great potential for culture as an omnivorous species with high chances of adapting to varying feeding strategies.•There are knowledge gaps about size at maturity, inducing hormones and larvae weaning that require further investigations. |
