This article discusses the value of the routine practice of obtaining a segment of umbilical cord at delivery for the determining of acid-base values, which may help the obstetrician establish an etiology of an intrapartum problem, aid in the resuscitation of the newborn infant, and help the neonatologist in the immediate management of the newborn infant. |
