Nerve Blocks in the Critical Care Environment

Abstrakt: Neural blockade using local anesthetics is indicated in the critical care patient to provide analgesia for painful conditions, anesthesia for invasive procedures, sympathetic nerve block, and information to aid diagnosis of painful conditions. Benefits of nerve blocks in addition to relieving pain are presented. Basic local anesthetic pharmacology is reviewed, and specific clinical techniques of neural blockade are discussed.
