Abstrakt: Nurses from non-Nordic countries are not allowed to work in Sweden as registered nurses without a Swedish certificate. Normally it is obtained by passing a standardized test. The candidates prepare themselves individually for the test, which causes some difficulties. Special training programs have been developed at some of the Swedish nursing colleges. In this study interview responses and narratives of eight immigrant nurses' were analysed. The analysis showed that obtaining a Swedish certificate is often a traumatic process of adaption, including issues of identity, language and socialization. The study also underlined the importence of getting inside the role of the Swedish nurse at an early stage, in order to faciliate the cultural and social integration. The professional support giving in the learning period, as well as the status of the training needs to be improved.
