Abstrakt: Anthracite and sand media samples were collected from several treatment plants and analyzed for surface manganese oxide [MnOx(s)] coating levels and dissolved manganese (Mn) uptake capability. A short‐term (4‐h) standard protocol was developed to quantify the Mn uptake capability using a recirculating laboratory‐scale batch system. Media were evaluated as collected in the field and after free chlorine regeneration. The MnOx(s)coating level on media varied greatly (0.01 to > 120 mg Mn/g media). All dual‐media filters showed a depth profile characterized by more MnOx(s)coating and dissolved Mn uptake ability for the anthracite than for the sand media. The Mn uptake ability of media did not increase linearly with increasing MnOx(s)coating level, indicating that not all of the media‐associated MnOx(s)is available for Mn uptake. The standard uptake ability protocol is useful for assessing the actual and potential Mn uptake capability of media in full‐scale plants.
