An automated apparatus for measuring the thermal diffusivity of sedimentary rocks by a pulse technique is described. The method involves heating one end of the sample and monitoring the temperature rise at three points along its length. The thermal diffusivity is calculated by numerical solution of the diffusion equation. Combining this measurement with the density and specific heat, the thermal conductivity of the sample is calculated. Excellent agreement is found when results are compared for samples measured with both the pulse method and the conventional steady-state divided bar method. |
