AbstractAiming to find compounds of natural origin that present molluscicide activity, essential oil from leaves of Eugenia unifloraL. (Brazilian cherry tree) was obtained by steam distillation in a Clevenger type apparatus and evaluated on Lymnaea columella, an intermediate host of the parasite Fasciola hepatica, and Biomphalaria tenagophila,an intermediate host of the parasite Schistosoma mansoni. For chemical characterization, the E. uniflora L.essential oil was analyzed by gas chromatography with flame ionization detector (GC-FID) and by mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The major components found were: (-)-selina-1,3,7(11)-trien-8-one (25.0%) and oxidoxelina-1,3,7(11)-trien-8-one (22.1%). The LD100value was 100ppm for L. columellaand 60 ppm for B. tenagophila. These concentrations are within the parameters recommended by the WHO. In addition to the molluscicidal effect, at a concentration of 20 ppm the E. unifloraL. essential oil presented an inhibitory effect on the oviposition of the two species evaluated. In this way, essential oil from E. unifloraL. leaves presented potential for use as a natural molluscicide to control of L. columellaand B. tenagophila. |
