AbstractLeaves of Sesamum angustifolium(Oliv.) Engl. have traditionally been used to treat infections of the skin, throat, eyes and inflamed mouth membranes. The aim of this study was to isolate and identify active metabolites from solvent extracts of S. angustifolium(Oliv.) Engl. initially by checking their anti-infective bioactivities, after purity confirmation by HPLC and determination of structures using analytical methods. Bioassay guided fractionation was used to isolate compounds from crude solvent extracts. Antimicrobial activity of extracted compounds was assessed by the broth dilution method and determining minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs). Structure elucidation was performed by spectroscopic techniques such as nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, infrared and mass spectrometry. Six compounds were isolated and two of them were identified as the already known hydrocarbon nonacosane and the glucosinolate, glucoiberverin. Four of the compounds could not be unambiguously identified and further work is required to determine their full structures. The six isolated compounds were active against methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA) and Candida albicansat concentrations ranging from 80±10.0 to 220±20.0 μg.mL-1. The crude extracts were also active against Salmonella typhiat higher concentrations. The study provided scientific evidence for the therapeutic use of extracts of S. angustifolium(Oliv.) Engl.in folklore medicine. |
