Piglets infected orally with different enteropathogenic strains of Escherichia colishowed increased losses of albumin into the gastrointestinal tract. The magnitude of these losses was dependent on the type of the infecting E. coli. Infection with strain 3252/2, E. coli0101 :K?, which produces diarrhoea accompanied by atrophy of the intestinal mucosa, resulted in a considerably higher gastrointestinal loss of albumin than did infection with strain 3372, E. coli0147:K89:K88, which is responsible for diarrhoea without detectable alteration of the intestinal mucosa. |
