Abstrakt: The capabilities of controlled substance diversion detection systems have evolved significantly along with decentralized automated dispensing machines. However, these systems have certain limitations. This article describes several scenarios in which commonly used systems may fail to detect diversion. These situations include diversion through the creation of discrepancies, large-volume removals over short periods of time, substitution with noncontrolled pain medications, and tampering and other unauthorized removals. The objective of this article is to increase awareness of these scenarios and suggest ways for pharmacy managers to improve their detection systems.
