The disease produced in chickens after infection per rectumwith cultures of Histomonas meleagridisis described. Following a single inoculum containing 1×106organisms, all chicks infected, at ages up to 51days of age, had lesions when killed after seven days. Inoculation of fewer than 1×106organisms produced lesions in some of the chicks only; the inoculum volume appeared to be unimportant. The number of birds with lesions was greatest after seven days, then decreased until after 32days when only one-quarter of the birds had lesions. Against histomonas infections (culture or tissue phase) in the chick, and Heterakis gallinae-induced infections in the turkey, dimetridazole and acinitrazole were the most potent of the compounds tested. |
